About the Artwork
The Fantasy Landscapes
The surreal forms and colors of the landscapes developed in my first painting - a failed attempt at realism. Barely into the image, I felt bored and confined by copying what I saw and began painting what I imagined. I have been visualizing this imaginary world continually since that first landscape.
I enjoy using realistic and fantastical images together in a landscape, combining the outer world and my inner world. The originals are acrylic paint on canvas.
The Midnight City Series
The Midnight City series is my first venture into creating fine digital images. These paintings are from mobile phone photos I have taken during night walks through downtown Seattle. I work from the reference photos using the digital painting programs Krita for Mac and Procreate for iPad.
The Sci-Fi Seattle Series
Feeling inspired to make some sci-fi images for fun, I used my home city of Seattle as the setting. Starting with photos, I manipulate and distort, paint new elements, and collage in 3D rendered objects. It's a playful venture.
The Impressions of Greenlake Series
I wanted to try impressionist-style plein air painting but had no desire to tote my canvas, paints, brushes, and other supplies - iPad Pro and Apple Pencil to the rescue. I had made other paintings using the iPad Pro, which also proved an amazingly flexible tool for plein air. Seattle's Greenlake is the subject of the first of these paintings.
Abstract Paintings
My abstract paintings began simply as what I refer to as "Insomnia Doodles." If I couldn't sleep, I would sit and draw colors and shapes with my iPad Pro and Apple Pencil. When I showed these to people, they were well received, and I decided to dedicate more time to creating intuitive and abstract drawings and paintings.
Leaves and Flowers
The works in this new gallery will be in various styles. A favorite style may develop or not as I continue to explore these subjects.
The Creatively Processed Collection
The images in this collection are digitally altered versions of photos of some of my original paintings on canvas. Using various imaging programs, I digitally paint and add filters, textures, etc., to make an old image new and different.
Fractals
Inspired by the classic Mandelbrot and Julia fractal algorithms, I interpreted these well-loved fractals using metallic and enamel-like texturing, 3D contouring, and lighting.
